Districlima was established in 2002 to carry out, for the first time in Spain, an urban heat and cold distribution network for use in heating, air conditioning and domestic hot water.
Initially, the project was in an area of Barcelona that had been remodelled to host the 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures.
Following the award of a public tender, in 2005, a second stage began with the extension of the network to the new 22@ technology district.
Following a new concession contract in 2016, the network was extended, to supply the Hospital del Mar.
It currently consists of a plant in the Forum area, which uses steam from the incineration of urban waste and cools equipment using seawater, and a second plant in the 22@ district, next to Plaça de les Glòries.
In the next few years, a third plant will come into operation which will supply the growing demand from customers.
